Environmental groups, like many Mississippi River Network members, have been overwhelmed with requests for volunteer opportunities. The National Audubon Society, for example, is organizing and activating over 13,000 volunteers who signed up to help in the months since the Gulf Coast in the months since the spill began.

For those who are unable to fully experience the Mississippi River or are planning a trip in the near future, check out the awesome videos posted by The Nature Conservancy.  Please follow the link below to catch a great glimpse of various parts of the river.  A filming crew spent nearly two weeks on the river to high-light river issues and ongoing solutions, the culminations of its massive Great Rivers Projects which includes a focus on both the upper and lower stretches of the Mississippi.  I found this link in the Our Mississippi Winter '10 newsletter/bulletin.  Enjoy!

In April 2009, a court decision ruled that pesticide discharge into national waters was considered pollution and required permits. Now the Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a new permit requirement that would decrease the amount of pesticides released. This proposed measure to preserve the environment as well as human health is now open for public comment.
