Description and Volunteer Activities

Our Vision

Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) advocates a new vision for the Mississippi, especially the river and its watershed in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Through active leadership and education, we seek to preserve and restore the river’s fish and wildlife, its vital floodplains and scenic bluffs, its natural and cultural treasures, its beauty and its romance. We envision a river on which small boats are safe and welcome, to which we have clear and easy access and in which we can safely swim and fish. We envision a river that is cleaner, healthier, more alive and more inviting, a river no one can ignore or take for granted.

Get your hands dirty — Volunteer!

Friends of the Mississippi River wants to help put your love of the river to work. Channeling volunteer energy is vital for our work, whether it’s for on-the-ground work like habitat restoration, key support like keeping our office running, or big events like the Mississippi River Challenge.

  • The majority of volunteers contribute their time and talents by participating in one or more of our 50+ volunteer events a year. Most are two to four hours in length and take place on weeknights or weekends. Visit our Events Calendar to see what’s coming up!
